February 4, 2008 MANITOBA COMPETITIVENESS GIVEN NEW FACE– – –Andrew Swan Appointed To Lead Department: Doer Andrew Swan has been appointed to lead Manitoba’s department of Competitiveness, Training and Trade, Premier Gary Doer announced today.
“Andrew brings an enormous amount of merit, skill and experience to the cabinet table,” said Doer. “I am confident he will further sharpen Manitoba’s competitive edge as he oversees the implementation of the largest apprenticeship training initiative ever undertaken in Manitoba.”
Swan was first elected MLA for Minto in the 2004 byelection, re-elected in 2007 and served as the legislative assistant to the minister of justice and the minister of labour and immigration, also the minister responsible for multiculturalism.
Prior to his election, Swan practiced law at the firm of Thompson Dorfman Sweatman. As a lawyer, he served as chair of the Manitoba Bar Association’s Young Lawyers subsection, assisted as a lecturer and a seminar leader for the Law Society of Manitoba’s bar admission course and served three years as a deputy chief commissioner of the Residential Tenancies Commission.
In addition to assuming the responsibilities for competitiveness, training, and trade, Swan will also be responsible for the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission and Manitoba Lotteries Corporation.
