ROBINSON WELCOMES ISLAND LAKE YOUTH WALKATHON PARTICIPANTS

A group of young people from the isolated Island Lake region in northern Manitoba will arrive at the Legislative Building today, ending a walkathon that started March 10 in Norway House aimed at raising awareness of issues facing youth in their communities.

Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson will meet the young people when they arrive at approximately 1 p.m.

“I commend all the participants of this walkathon for their political engagement and commitment to improving life in their communities,” said Robinson.  “We know the challenges facing our northern and remote communities are tremendous but I am encouraged by the determination of these young people to tackle the problems head on.”

The group of about 65 youth is led by members of an advisory group set up by Robinson in July 2007 following initial round table discussions on gang violence, suicide and substance abuse.  The November 2007 speech from the throne included the establishment of a northern and remote First Nations youth advisory council as part of the government’s overall strategy for northern Manitoba.
