March 31, 2008 PROVINCE CONGRATULATES MANITOBA'S WIN AT WOMEN'S WORLD CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPSCulture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson today congratulated the World Women’s Curling Champions led by Jennifer Jones. The Canadian champions beat China 7 to 4 on Sunday afternoon in the final of the Ford World Women’s Championship in Vernon, B.C.
“I want to salute Jennifer Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham, Jill Officer and Dawn Askin for playing so well all season and bringing home the world championship to Manitoba,” said Robinson. “Manitoba has long been known for producing great curlers and once more these athletes have demonstrated the skill and talent that keeps our province on the curling map.”
With the win, the Jones team became the first Manitoba team to win a world women’s crown since Connie Laliberte won in 1984. In 2005, Jones led her team to a Canadian team championship and received Sport Manitoba’s Silver Medallion Award of Excellence.
Jones and her newly-crowned world women’s curling championship team arrive home this evening.
