April 7, 2008 ROBINSON CONGRATULATES MANITOBA JUNO AWARD WINNERS AND NOMINEESCulture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson today congratulated the Manitoba artists who won 2008 Juno Awards.
“Amid Canada’s vibrant music industry, Manitoba continues to be seen as the home of a cutting-edge music scene. This year’s winners represented our province’s eclectic tastes and diversity and will act as Manitoba ambassadors on the national stage,” said Robinson. “I would also like to congratulate the City of Calgary and the people of Alberta for hosting such a successful and entertaining event.”
Manitoba band and Canadian Folk Music Award winner Nathan won their first Juno for their third release, Key Principles, which took roots and traditional album of the year (group). Brandon native and four-time Juno winner James Ehnes also won this year for classical album of the year in a collaboration with former Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra conductor Bramwell Tovey.
Singer/songwriter Little Hawk, (Troy Westwood) was nominated for Aboriginal recording of the year for Home and Native Land, whichwas also nominated at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards and the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.
Singer/songwriter Amanda Falk was nominated for contemporary Christian/gospel album of the year for her second release Beautiful. Falk won in the same category in 2006 for her self-titled debut album.
Loreena McKennitt and Julie Knowles were nominated for music DVD of the year for Nights from the Alhambra and Tom Cochrane was nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year for his album No Stranger.
“Thanks to all the Manitoba artists who were nominated or attended this year’s Juno awards for representing our province so well,” added Robinson.
The 37th annual Juno Awards took place in Calgary with host comedian Russell Peters.
