PROVINCE ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR POWWOWS AROUND MANITOBA

Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson today announced $72,850 in support of this year’s powwow celebrations being held around the province.

“These gatherings provide an important time for communities to celebrate their heritage and traditional values,” said Robinson.  “Our youth also use this time to learn from our elders who pass on valuable teachings for the next generation.”

Robinson noted the program was started in 2005 to support the cultural component of powwow celebrations.

Through the Aboriginal Cultural Initiatives program, support for cultural arts development in Aboriginal communities is provided for powwow celebrations which are considered signature community events. Grants generally range between $500 and $5,000.

The Misipawistik powwow, located off PTH 6, 400 kilometres north of Winnipeg on the Saskatchewan River, is one of 20 gatherings being supported by the province so far this year.

Robinson noted that these events contribute to local tourism, business and overall regional economic activities for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities around the province.

Manitoba Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport has consulted with Aboriginal communities and artists to identify needs and issues that prevent them from fully participating in arts and cultural industries. The idea of a program to support powwow celebrations emerged as one of the recommendations from these consultations.

Applications for funding are accepted on an ongoing basis. More information is available at:
