October 21, 2008 PROVINCE ENCOURAGES MANITOBANS TO `REDUCE WASTE, LOVE THE EARTH' DURING WASTE REDUCTION WEEK AND ALL YEAR– – –Improved Recycling at Birds Hill and Grand Beach Provincial Parks Highlight WRAPP Fund Grants: Struthers Waste Reduction Week is Oct. 19 to 25 and Manitobans are encouraged to do all they can to help reduce waste year round, Conservation Minster Stan Struthers announced today.
“This year’s theme of ‘reduce waste and love the Earth’ captures the message since we only have one Earth and we are all responsible for helping to reduce the flow of waste to landfills,” said Struthers. “As part of the week’s activities, I am pleased to announce funding to set up extensive recycling programs at Birds Hill and Grand Beach provincial parks.”
The Birds Hill and Grand Beach projects are two of nine projects receiving $164,950 in funding support under the Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention (WRAPP) Fund this year. The projects will see a network of collection facilities set up in various areas of the parks and serviced by parks staff.
The WRAPP Fund supports improved waste reduction and pollution prevention practices in Manitoba. Priority areas are organic waste management and composting, construction and demolition waste management, pollution prevention, and model waste management system development and planning. The minister noted the WRAPP Fund has been instrumental in Manitoba’s waste reduction efforts. Since 1999, Manitobans have recycled more than 523,898 tonnes of material, which equal to 73,000 garbage trucks full of recyclable materials. Last year, Manitobans recycled 68,809 tonnes of paper, aluminium, glass and plastic.
The WRAPP Fund is a targeted funding program under the Sustainable Development Innovations Fund. Other targeted funding programs are the Environmental Youth Corps program, the Manitoba Climate Change Action Fund and the Water Stewardship Fund.
Over 200 projects worth more than $3.5 million have been supported through the WRAPP Fund since its creation in 2000. Information on the WRAPP Fund is available on request from Manitoba Conservation’s Pollution Prevention Branch or online at www.susdev.gov.mb.ca.
A free composting workshop will be held at Broadway Neighbourhood Centre tomorrow from 5 to 6 p.m. as a part of Waste Reduction Week activities.
