June 17, 2009 MINISTER CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF SUPPORT FOR MANITOBA NON-PROFIT COMMUNITY GROUPSCulture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson today congratulated the Manitoba Community Services Council (MCSC) on celebrating 25 years of distributing funds in partnership with the Manitoba government to non-profit community service organizations across the province.
“The commitments volunteers make to our communities lead to enhanced quality of life resulting in thriving, vibrant communities and a stronger Manitoba”, said Robinson. “The MCSC, a volunteer-run organization, has consistently supported those efforts. This is truly volunteerism in action.”
Since 1984, with funding provided by the Manitoba government, MCSC has provided over 9,000 grants worth $73 million to communities across the entire province. MCSC volunteers have spent over 40,000 hours providing peer reviews of grant applications.
For over 25 years, the range and scope of community organizations and projects that have been approved through this process is impressive, said Robinson. Arts, cultural and heritage groups, child‑care centres, community-health organizations, recreation commissions, youth groups and many others have been able to purchase equipment and supplies, develop new programs and services, and take on capital repairs and construction with help from the MCSC.
