July 28, 2009 PROVINCE PROVIDES NEW FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY CANCER AND HEALTH SERVICES IN ERIKSDALEThe province will provide $720,000 in funding to provide community cancer services as well as health and wellness programs at a new wellness centre to be built by the community of Eriksdale, Health Minister Theresa Oswald announced today.
“This new wellness centre will ensure area residents are able to access health services as well as recreation opportunities to maintain and even improve their health,” said Oswald. “I want to congratulate the community for stepping forward and building this facility in Eriksdale to ensure the health and wellness of their community now and into the future.”
The funding will be used to equip, furnish and operate the health services part of the facility, which will take up approximately half of the 6,000-square-foot building.
Community cancer and other health services planned for the facility will include:
· mental-health supports and other services for cancer patients and their families;
· a cancer services navigator to improve access to services for Interlake residents and co-ordinate care closer to home;
· enhanced palliative-care services including supporting pain and symptom clinical care through Telehealth;
· education of local health professionals through Telehealth;
· enhanced screening services, particularly cervical cancer screening; and
· community-health staff offices, clinical space and meeting space.
“We are very pleased to be part of this exciting venture, which incorporates a comprehensive spectrum of wellness and health services,” said Kevin Beresford, chief executive officer of the Interlake Regional Health Authority.
The community plans to offer recreational space, a fitness centre and space for commercial activities in the remaining space in the new facility.
The funding announced today builds on recent investments in health care in Eriksdale including $500,000 to renovate portions of E.M. Crowe Memorial Hospital to improve patient flow and to establish a mobile ultrasound program. The mobile ultrasound program based in Eriksdale also provides services to other communities including Arborg.
