August 12, 2009 FEDERAL, PROVINCIAL AND MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENTS INVEST IN WINNIPEG'S RECREATIONAL INFRASTRUCTUREWinnipeg, Manitoba – The St. Vital Mustangs will move forward with the revitalization of their football field thanks to funding from all three levels of government.
Today, the Honourable Theresa Oswald, Health Minister, on behalf of the Province of Manitoba; Rod Bruinooge, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification; and Acting Deputy Mayor, Gord Steeves on behalf of the City of Winnipeg, announced funding for renovations to the football field that will create jobs in Winnipeg.
“The Mustangs football club has had a key role in developing talent and fostering a healthy athletic spirit in young Winnipeggers since 1948,” Minister Oswald said. “By providing funding for the club to rebuild its field, we can help the Mustangs continue to grow as one of the city’s most important sports organizations.”
“I’m pleased to announce our Government’s support for the revitalization of the St. Vital Mustangs’ football field,” said MP Rod Bruinooge. “Together, we’re creating jobs and building the foundation for future growth and prosperity.”
“I am thrilled that money is being committed to improve our local recreational facilities,” said Acting Deputy Mayor Steeves. “The Mustangs are a dedicated organization that is well known within our community and are well deserving of these funds to upgrade and renovate their facility.”
Total cost of the project is $420,000. Federal funding of $138,600 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan with the Province of Manitoba providing $150,000. The City of Winnipeg is contributing $61,000 towards the project.
Under the project, the St. Vital Mustangs Football Club will revitalize its athletic field by replacing field lighting.
“The St. Vital Mustangs are obviously elated with today’s announcement,” said Paul Nellis, President of the St. Vital Mustangs Football Club. “The commitment shown here by all levels of government to Amateur football in our community helps ensure the success of our kids today, and for many more in the years to come. What a great way to kick off the Mustangs next 60 years in Amateur football.”
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
Today’s announcement continues the important steps the Province of Manitoba is taking to support economic growth by investing $1.6 billion this year into infrastructure to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and renew the province’s roads, schools, health facilities, and water treatment facilities.
