February 18, 2009 TRAPPERS FEST, SKATEBOARD PARK AMONG FIRST NEIGHBOURHOODS ALIVE! PROJECTS TO BE SUPPORTED IN THE PASTHE PAS - The Trappers Festival and the Kelsey skateboard park are among the first projects to benefit from investments by the Neighbourhoods Alive! (NA!) community revitalization initiative as it expands to this northern community, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Steve Ashton announced during an event at the Trappers Festival here today.
“Whether it’s community engagement, support for persons with disabilities or improved recreation opportunities for youth, these new Neighbourhoods Alive! investments are building healthier, more active communities in Manitoba’s north,” Ashton said.
The four community revitalization projects supported by a $112,189 provincial investment include:
· Community engagement project - $74,974 to enable the North Forks Economic Development Authority to support NA! in engaging the community, establishing an interim advisory committee and developing a proposed structure for co-ordinating ongoing revitalization efforts.
· Kelsey Recreation Commission skateboard park enhancement - $5,000 to support the purchase and installation of a stair set and series of grind rails for the skateboard park in The Pas. The project has allowed the The Pas Friendship Centre to enhance the usability of an existing facility and its attractiveness to potential users.
· Disabilities office expansion - $26,000 to serve adults with intellectual disabilities by expanding available programming space of the Association for Human Development’s newly constructed building.
· Festival furnishings - $6,215 toward purchasing display tables for the northern Manitoba Trapper’s Festival to allow it to accommodate arts and draft show exhibitors and make the tables available to other community organizations.
Neighbourhoods Alive! is a long-term, community-based, social and economic development strategy that supports and encourages community-driven revitalization efforts in neighbourhoods in need in The Pas, Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson, Portage, Dauphin, Flin Flon and Selkirk. The strategy focuses on key areas such as community leadership building, housing and physical improvements, employment and training, education and recreation, safety, and crime prevention.
