April 30, 2009 OPERATIONS AT FRANCO-MANITOBAN CULTURAL CENTRE WOULD BE MODERNIZED UNDER LEGISLATIVE AMENDMENTSThe Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre would be able to operate more effectively and efficiently under amendments to its governing legislation, Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson said today, after introducing the proposals in the legislature.
“Much of Manitoba’s heritage was built by our francophone forebearers and these amendments would strengthen the centre’s ability to fulfil its continuing mission to present, promote, foster and sponsor cultural and artistic activities in the French language for all Manitobans,” Robinson said.
Proposed changes in le Centre culturel franco-manitobain Amendment Act include:
· modernizing the existing act to increase accountability and better enable the corporation to operate more effectively and efficiently,
· increasing the size of the board to a maximum of 12 members,
· requiring at least half of the members appointed to the board by the lieutenant-governor to be chosen from a list of nominees from la Societe franco-manitobaine,
· requiring the Franco-Manitoban Culture Centre and la Societe franco-manitobaine to undertake a consultation process to select potential members for the board, and
· allowing for remuneration of board members who are now only compensated for out-of-pocket expenses.
The centre is managed as a Crown agency and is located on Provencher Avenue in Winnipeg, the home to many cultural groups that contribute to the cultural and artistic vitality of the Franco‑Manitoban community, the minister said.
