May 4, 2009 MANITOBA FIRE COMMISSIONER RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL FIRE SERVICE ACCREDITATION CONGRESS AWARDDouglas Popowich, Manitoba’s fire commissioner, has received the Martin E. Grimes award from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress, Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan announced today.
“Douglas Popowich very much deserves this award as, under his leadership, Manitoba has seen a number of positive developments in the areas of enhanced fire codes, the expansion of the Manitoba Emergency Services College and the formation of Canada’s all-season Urban Search and Rescue Team,” said Allan. “We congratulate Doug on receiving this award and thank him for his continued service to the province.”
The award was established in 1996 by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress to recognize individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the fire service by elevating the level of professionalism in fire services through leadership in the development and improvement of professional qualifications standards, certification and accreditation.
Popowich is one of only four recipients to have been honoured with the Martin E. Grimes Award since its inception in 1996.
