WORK RULES FOR STATUTORY HOLIDAYS APPLY ON LABOUR DAY, SEPT. 7

Manitoba Labour and Immigration advises that at most workplaces on Labour Day, Monday, Sept. 7, employees will be entitled to one and a half times their regular rate of pay for any hours worked on that day, in addition to general holiday pay.

Labour Day is a general or statutory holiday for all employees who work in a provincially regulated business.  Most provincial government offices will be closed that day.

In Winnipeg and communities with a Sunday and holiday shopping bylaw, retail stores that normally operate with more than four people at a time (including the owner) are not allowed to be open on Labour Day. Retail stores in other communities that normally operate with more than four people (including the owner) can operate on Labour Day with four or fewer people.

Manitoba’s eight general holidays include New Year's Day, Louis Riel Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

For further information, call the Employment Standards Branch at 945-3352 in Winnipeg or 1‑800‑821-4307 (toll-free) outside Winnipeg. Information is also available at www.manitoba.ca/labour/standards
