MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE TO $9 PER HOUR TO TAKE EFFECT OCT. 1

– – –
Hike Represents Second Part Of Staggered Increase: Allan

The hourly minimum wage in Manitoba will increase by 25 cents to $9 Oct. 1, Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan announced today.

“It is important to continue to help lower-income earners by boosting spending power while at the same time minimizing impacts on business with the staggered increase,” said Allan.  “This minimum wage increase will help about 28,000 Manitobans.”

Manitoba’s minimum wage increased by 25 cents to $8.75 an hour on May 1 and has increased incrementally from $6 an hour in 1999.

Future minimum wage increases will be examined by the Labour Management Review Committee on which both labour and management are represented.

With this increase, Manitoba maintains its position near the middle of minimum wage rates among Canadian jurisdictions with Alberta, Yukon, Newfoundland and Quebec at or near $9.
