Province, City of Brandon to Offer Incentives to Homeowners to Install Sump Pumps, In-line Backwater Valves

Brandon—The Province of Manitoba and the City of Brandon will offer a subsidy to assist homeowners with the cost of purchasing and installing sump pumps and in-line backwater valves in homes to protect them from sewer backup, Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux and Mayor Shari Decter Hirst announced here today.

“We are doing everything we can to protect Manitobans from high water levels this spring and we are also helping Manitoba families take steps to protect their homes,” Lemieux said.  “We are pleased to offer this new program that will encourage more Manitobans to install sump pumps and in-line backup water valves to protect their most valuable possessions.”

The subsidy program will pay up to 60 per cent of the cost of installing a sewer/drainage backup system to a maximum of $3,000 per household (up to $1,000 toward the installation of an approved in-line backwater valve and up to $2,000 toward the installation of a sump pump and pit drainage system).

“The city is pleased to enter into this partnership arrangement with the province to offer our residents some protection and peace of mind given the possibility of increased flows in the city sewer system this spring,” said Decter Hirst.  “Not only will homeowners be provided protection in the immediate future, but the installation of this system will offer long-term protection against basement flooding.”

City council approved the program at its meeting on Feb. 14, which now includes $60,000 each from the province and City of Brandon for a total of $120,000.  Homeowners must hire a plumber currently licensed by the City of Brandon to perform the eligible labour, ensure that appropriate permits are obtained and arrange for the necessary inspection of the work.  New home construction will not be eligible as sump pumps and in-line backwater valves are required under the building code.
