Wowchuk Announces Budget Date

House to Resume April 12 with Budget Speech

Finance Minister Rosann Wowchuk today announced the 2011 provincial budget will be introduced April 12, when the fifth session of the 39th Manitoba legislature resumes.

“Budget 2011 will focus on the values and priorities of Manitoba families,” Wowchuk said.  “It will continue our strong record of job creation and investments in health, education, public safety and quality of life.  Our budget will also maintain progress on Manitoba’s five-year economic plan.”

In addition, a special warrant for $233 million was recently approved to authorize the additional expenditure requirements for 2010-11.  These additional expenditures will be more than offset by increased revenues noted in the province’s mid-year report of $287 million including an additional $160 million in personal income taxes and $70 million more in corporate income taxes.  Third quarter results and year-end projections will accompany Budget 2011.

Increased costs for emergency expenditures related to 2010 spring flooding, forest fires and preparations for a potentially serious 2011 flood, support for families, health-care services and public safety, among others, were recognized in the warrant.
