Provincial Mapping Services to be Enhanced, Better Co-ordinated: Chomiak
– – –Newly Formed GeoManitoba to Support Delivery of Services to Public: Minister
More co-ordinated and enhanced mapping and geographic information services are now available to the public through GeoManitoba, Conservation Minister Dave Chomiak announced today.
“GeoManitoba brings together all government mapping and data management services, making it easier for the public and organizations to access these services,” said Chomiak. “It will also guide the use of geographic information services across government, ensuring the highest possible standards and the best use of new and emerging technologies.”
GeoManitoba will co-ordinate acquiring mapping and geospatial information and will provide enhanced mapping and survey services to government and the general public throughout the province. This includes the sale of maps, photos and digital mapping information to the public, non-government organizations and government agencies.
“Quality mapping information supports recreation, strengthens sustainable environmental decision-making, expands economic development opportunities and enhances public safety,” said Chomiak. “Ensuring this material is widely available means all agencies can access accurate data to help them make these important decisions.”
The minister noted that Nov. 13 to 19 has been proclaimed as Geography Awareness Week and today as Geographic Information Systems Day to promote geographic education in schools and among the public.
