Province Provides $350,000 to Support St. Boniface Cathedral Renewal Project

The Manitoba government is providing more than $350,000 to support the St. Boniface Cathedral Renewal Project to preserve the cathedral for future generations, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino announced today.

“The St. Boniface Cathedral is an iconic building and one of Manitoba’s great historic treasures,” said Marcelino.  “This funding will ensure site visitors will be able to discover Manitoba’s history and our unique architecture for decades to come.”

Provincial funds under the Urban Development Initiatives and the Community Places Program were used to support critically required repairs to historical elements.  This included replacing the roof and window repairs in the sacristy (the room housing sacred vessels and vestments) and repairs to the sanctuary window linking the original 1908 sacristy to the 1972 building.

The St. Boniface Cathedral-Basilica is both a parish church and the Mother Church of Western Canada.  It received a heritage designation from the province in 1994.

“It’s important for us to invest in our historic buildings to preserve and protect them for future generations,” said Marcelino.  “We support the work of the many dedicated people and organizations  who made this critical restoration project a priority in the community.”
