Province, Music Industry Supporting Local Talent, Thousands of Good Jobs

The provincial government’s partnership with the local music industry and the 2014 Juno Awards means thousands of good jobs and significant economic benefits for all Manitobans, Premier Selinger said today at the official Juno 2014 kickoff.

“Manitoba has a stellar reputation for producing talented artists, supported by an industry that is second-to-none in Canada.  What many Manitobans don’t realize is the importance of this industry for our economy,” said the premier.  “Hosting the Juno Awards this coming spring is not only the perfect time to showcase our incredible talent, but also a great opportunity for local businesses.”

The Juno Awards are expected to contribute $10 million to the Manitoba economy with the equivalent of 80 full-time jobs created.

Manitoba Music reports there are approximately 4,000 music entrepreneurs and 368 music companies in Manitoba.  According to a recent independent economic impact study commissioned by Manitoba Music, the industry generated an estimated $25 million in provincial and federal taxes in 2011 and had a total GDP impact of $71.3 million, supporting the equivalent of 4,363 full-time jobs.

“As we get ready to welcome back Canada’s music awards to the heart of the continent in March, there’s no better time to show off our innovative and internationally acclaimed artists and music companies.  Manitoba has a long music history that has laid the foundation for exciting new talent.  We would like to thank the Province of Manitoba for recognizing the importance of our province’s music industry to the social and economic health of Manitoba,” said Sara Stasiuk, executive director, Manitoba Music.

“Provincial support for this important and exciting industry is bringing more business to Manitoba and keeping our artists and music industry competitive on the world stage,” said the premier.  “We look forward to even greater success and continued national and international recognition, building on the 102 music award nominations Manitobans received in 2012-13.”
