Manitobans Invited to Celebrate Education Week: Minister Allum

Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum celebrated with students and teachers at Laura Secord School today as he officially announced funding for a new gym.

“It’s so important that our young people lead healthy, active lives,” said Minister Allum.  “The funding I’m announcing today will ensure students here have greater opportunities to be involved in sports and other physical activities.”

Built in 1912, Laura Secord is a nursery to Grade 6 school with approximately 535 students.  The gym addition will provide new space of approximately 4,000 square feet plus space for change rooms, washrooms, storage and a teacher’s office.

“The board of trustees is pleased that the new gymnasium will give Laura Secord students more opportunities to participate and enjoy active learning that will promote healthy living experiences,” said Suzanne Hrynyk, chair, board of trustees, Winnipeg School Division.

The old gymnasium will continue to be utilized and discussions are now underway on how to repurpose it.

It is anticipated construction will begin next year with the new gymnasium expected to be completed in late 2016, the minister said.

This week is Education Week and Minister Allum also commented on the role partnerships play in delivering quality education.

“The Manitoba government is working in partnership with parents, educators and the community to make the province a leader in Canada in education quality, and Education Week reminds us of how students benefit from these strong partnerships,” said Minister Allum.  “Every student in Manitoba deserves a quality education and our government is committed to providing it.  Our aim is to make Manitoba a leader in education, full of healthy, active children.”

Since 1999, the Manitoba government has invested $1.162 billion in public school capital projects including 21 new schools and 14 replacement schools, and has completed extensive renovations and additions to dozens of existing schools.
