Investment of $10 Million Will Rejuvenate Manitoba Museum, Improve Experience for Manitoba Families: Premier Selinger
Manitoba families will benefit from better visitor experience and new displays thanks to a $10 million investment by the province, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.
“The Manitoba Museum is a cherished cultural asset that tells the story of our shared history and we support plans to improve and expand their wonderful facility,” Premier Selinger said. “We are excited to support the largest renewal in the history of the museum to ensure that it continues to be a source of pride and family fun for generations to come.”
The museum plans to bring the Manitoba story forward through upgrades to the Orientation, Grasslands and Nonsuch Galleries, as well as the construction of a new Winnipeg Gallery, the premier said. The museum will work in partnership with the community to tell more of its stories and to display more significant artifacts including the internationally renowned Hudson’s Bay Company Museum Collection.
“Museum visitors will be offered enhanced and contemporized stories of Manitoba with a strong focus on Indigenous people, immigration, first contact and trade, and the connection between people and nature,” said Scott Craig, chair, board of governors, The Manitoba Museum.
“The Manitoba Museum is grateful to the Province of Manitoba for their leadership support of our Capital Renewal Plan,” said Jeoff Chipman, chair, capital renewal committee, The Manitoba Museum. “Bringing Our Stories Forward is the second stepping-stone project of the Museum’s Capital Renewal Plan, building on the Alloway Hall Expansion and Renewal Project announced earlier this year. We look forward to our continued work with the province to fully realize the Museum’s Capital Renewal Plan.”
The project will require three years to develop and install, the premier said. Additional funding support for the $16-million proposal is expected to come from a private-sector capital campaign and other levels of government. The project is expected to begin in mid-2016 with the official opening planned for 2020 to coincide with Manitoba’s 150th celebration, Hudson’s Bay Company 350th anniversary and The Manitoba Museum’s 50th anniversary, Premier Selinger said.
