Province Recognizes Outstanding Achievements of Manitoba Educators

Eight Manitoba educators have been recognized for their successful and innovative teaching practices with the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart announced today.

“Great teachers result in bright, engaged students who are well-prepared to lead our province into the future,” said Wishart.  “Their commitment to excellence continues to benefit students long after they’ve graduated and that’s why I’m very pleased to recognize these valued educators.”

Award recipients include:

  • teaching excellence:
    • Cheryl Lynn McQueen, Victory School, Seven Oaks School Division;
    • Lisa Michaluk, Sigurbjorg Stefansson Early School, Evergreen School Division;
    • Louise Shachtay, R.B. Russell Vocational School, Winnipeg School Division;
  • outstanding new teacher:  Colleen Dawson, Lord Selkirk School, Winnipeg School Division;
  • outstanding team collaboration:  Melanie Gamache, Lesia Jensen and Kim Merasty, Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary, Mountain View School Division; and
  • outstanding school leader:  Tanis Ziprick, Dr. F.W.L. Hamilton School, River East Transcona School Division.

“Anyone who remembers their favourite teacher from school knows how inspiring a great teacher can be, so it’s important we take the time to recognize just a few of the excellent educators we have in the province,” said Wishart.

The minister’s awards were initiated in 2006.  Award recipients can be nominated by students, parents/guardians, fellow teachers, school and school division administrators, and school trustees.  Each award winner receives a certificate of recognition and a $500 cash award.
