Manitoba offers Condolences on the Passing of A. Rolph Huband

Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Rochelle Squires today offered condolences on behalf of the Manitoba government to the family and friends of A. Rolph Huband, who passed away Sunday in Oakville, Ont. at the age of 87.

“Rolph Huband was a passionate supporter of Canadian history and was instrumental in bringing the Hudson Bay Company Archives to Manitoba,” Squires said.  “Throughout his life, he was dedicated to the preservation of history and in 2004 was awarded the Order of Canada for his outstanding contributions to Canadian history.”

Huband was a former vice-president and secretary of the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC).  He guided the transfer of the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives from London, England to the Archives of Manitoba in 1974 and co-ordinated the formal donation of the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives to the Province of Manitoba and HBC’s artifact collection to the Manitoba Museum in 1994.

Huband was also the founding chair and emeritus publisher of Canada’s History Magazine and was instrumental in setting up the Hudson’s Bay Company History Foundation (HBCHF).  The HBCHF provides sustainable financial support for the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives, The Manitoba Museum and Canada’s National History Society.

The minister noted it is largely due to Huband’s passion and tireless efforts that these invaluable historical collections, documenting the exploration and settlement of Western Canada are supported, known and accessible to scholars, researchers and the general public.
