Manitoba Government Appoints Executive Director to Francophone Affairs Secretariat

The Manitoba government reaffirmed its commitment to support the continued progress of francophone affairs in the province by selecting Teresa Collins as the new executive director for the Francophone Affairs Secretariat, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Rochelle Squires, minister responsible for francophone affairs, announced today.

“The francophone community is such an important part of the cultural fabric of our province and we are very pleased to have someone with great local connections take on this important role,” Squires said.  “With Teresa at the helm of the secretariat, our government is confident the great relationship already established with the francophone community can only continue to grow.”

The minister noted that based on Collins’ experience and proven leadership skills, she will be trusted to manage several initiatives under the Francophone Community Enhancement Act.  The legislation was adopted earlier this year.  It establishes a framework to promote the vitality of the francophone community in Manitoba and supports its development through the activities of the Francophone Affairs Secretariat.

Squires said that one of the highlights of the act is the modernization of the Francophone Affairs Secretariat’s mandate, which will be one of the first projects on the agenda for Collins.

The executive director of the Francophone Affairs Secretariat offers advice to the minister on francophone issues, monitors compliance with the Francophone Community Enhancement and Support Act as well as the provinces French Language Services Policy.  The position also works closely with the francophone community and serves as a liaison to government for francophone issues.

Collins is currently the director of Translation Services within the provincial government and has worked for the province since 2006.  Collins will begin her new role on Dec. 1 and will continue to serve as the director of Translation Services.
