The Manitoba government has announced the appointment of five new individuals to the board of Sport Manitoba, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Rochelle Squires announced today.

“I want to welcome the new members of the board,” said Squires.  “Sport plays a huge role in the lives of Manitobans and we look forward to the new energy and excitement these highly talented individuals will bring to Sport Manitoba.”

Sport Manitoba was incorporated in 1996, following the merger of the province’s Sport Directorate and the Manitoba Sport Federation to implement the province’s policy on sport.

Other new appointments include Desiree Scott, Dennis Thiessen and Carter Chen.  Scott is a two-time Olympian and women’s soccer Olympic bronze medallist (2012 and 2016) as well as a 2011 Pan-Am Games gold medallist.  Thiessen is a Paralympic curling gold medallist from 2014, national wheelchair curling champion (2011 and 2013) and 2013 world wheelchair curling champion.  Chen is a senior account manager at the Royal Bank of Canada, United Way volunteer and the volunteer co-ordinator with KidSport Manitoba.

The terms of two members of the previous board had expired, while the appointments of the remaining three were revoked.  Squires thanked the outgoing board members for their contributions and commitment.
