Prioritizing Core Needs in Existing Facilities Will Maintain Positive Learning Environments for Manitoba Students: Wishart

The Manitoba government has approved 72 infrastructure renewal projects across the province and will invest more than $44 million to ensure the structural integrity of public schools and the continued safety of students and educators, Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart announced today.

“The health and safety of Manitoba students and educators must be prioritized,” said Wishart.  “These necessary upgrades and repairs to existing facilities will ensure that Manitoba schools are maintained and renewed in order to provide our students with the best possible learning environments.”

Wishart noted the projects will be completed within a timeframe of six to 24 months following the award of tenders and start of construction.  The projects announced include necessary health and safety-related infrastructure upgrades to roofing, mechanical systems and accessibility including:

  • $11.3 million for roof replacements for schools in the Brandon, Flin Flon, Mountain View, Pembina Trails, Pine Creek, Prairie Rose, River East Transcona, Seven Oaks, Sunrise, Turtle River and Winnipeg school divisions;
  • $14.4 million for mechanical systems replacements for schools in the Brandon, Frontier, Interlake, Lord Selkirk, Pembina Trails, Red River Valley, River East Transcona, Seine River, Seven Oaks, St. James-Assiniboia, Sunrise, Turtle River and Winnipeg school divisions;
  • $10.3 million for structural projects for schools in the Lord Selkirk, Mountain View, Pine Creek, Portage la Prairie, Prairie Rose, Seven Oaks, Sunrise, St. James-Assiniboia, Swan Valley, Turtle River and Winnipeg school divisions; and
  • $8.8 million for access projects for schools in the Brandon, DSFM, Garden Valley, Hanover, Mountain View, Pembina Trails, Portage la Prairie, River East Transcona, St. James-Assiniboia, Turtle Mountain, Turtle River and Winnipeg school divisions.

In addition, the province confirmed that two projects committed to by the previous administration, which had varying levels of Treasury Board status and different levels of conception, will not be receiving provincial funding.  The projects, a gym addition at Kelvin High School and a sports field rehabilitation project at Dakota Collegiate, have received formal notification from Manitoba Education and Training.

“Our government remains committed to maintaining the core infrastructure of public schools across Manitoba,” said Wishart.  “Today’s announcement ensures that Manitoba schools are able to address their most urgent needs."
