New Seniors' Complex Offers Safe, Affordable Housing in Russell
RUSSELL—A new housing complex serving Russell and surrounding communities will ensure seniors have access to safe and affordable housing. To mark the grand opening of Park Manor, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Manitoba Families Minister Scott Fielding highlighted the $1.15-million joint federal-provincial contribution to the facility under the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) agreement.
“Our government recognizes the importance of caring for our aging citizens and is committed to helping seniors in Manitoba and throughout the country access safe and affordable housing,” said Duclos. “The official opening of Park Manor will improve the well-being and sense of security of seniors in Russell, which will benefit the whole community.”
Park Manor is a three-storey building that includes six one-bedroom and 18 two-bedroom units, available on a seniors’ life lease. The building meets Manitoba’s accessible design standards and has been designed to meet the requirements of Manitoba Hydro’s PowerSmart New Buildings Program.
“The grand opening of Park Manor is a truly memorable day for tenants and the many dedicated members of the community who have worked together to make it possible,” said Greg Nesbitt, MLA for Riding Mountain, who attended the grand opening on behalf of Fielding. “Our government is proud to share this day with you and we will continue to work together to help meet the long-term housing needs of seniors in Manitoba.”
The Park Manor project was led locally by Russell Lions Manor Inc., a non-profit organization focused on providing affordable housing to seniors in the region. Total project costs were approximately $5.8 million.
“Our committee realized several years ago that there was a real need for additional senior housing in our area,” said Terry Rolfe, building committee chair, Russell Lions Manor Inc. “We considered several different concepts but when this affordable housing proposal came forward, we knew this fit our area’s needs. Today’s grand opening is a celebration for everyone who worked so hard to make this seniors’ housing project a reality for the community.”
In 2016, the governments of Canada and Manitoba announced an expanded commitment to the IAH agreement, representing almost $90 million over two years. The new funding is in addition to approximately $166 million in joint eight-year funding to help create more affordable housing options in Manitoba.
