Forest Firefighting Efforts in North Going Well, Some Travel Restrictions Being Lifted
Manitoba Conservation advises that progress continues to be made fighting fires in the north and rain has helped reduce the fire hazard. Travel and fire restrictions in some areas of the northwest have now been lifted.
However, travel restrictions and a ban on open fires continues in some areas of the north due to high fire hazard. The latest information on forest fires, travel restrictions and the status of provincial campgrounds is available at www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/fire or local district Manitoba Conservation offices.
There were 17 new fires yesterday, all but one caused by lightning. There were 14 fires in the northeast and three in the northwest region, but none are causing any significant concerns today. Rain occurred over most of the north, reducing the fire hazard and more rain showers are forecast for today and tomorrow.
Good progress continues to be made on the fire near Cranberry Portage. The area received rain showers yesterday, aiding grounds crews in the firefighting efforts.
There are 342 firefighters and support staff, 14 helicopters, four water bombers and other heavy equipment continuing to fight this fire. Manitoba’s efforts are being assisted by water bombers, support aircraft and fire crews from Ontario, B.C., Minnesota and Wisconsin.
