Province Provides up to $350,000 for a Cool Spray Park in Lorette

LORETTE - Residents of this community will soon be able to enjoy a cool spray on a hot day thanks to up to $350,000 in provincial funding that will help finance the construction of a new community spray park, Premier Greg Selinger announced here today.

The announcement is part of a $16.5-million funding commitment under the Building Manitoba Fund for recreation facilities in rural and northern Manitoba.

“Ensuring there are safe areas for recreational activities for residents of all ages is a priority of all Manitoba communities and we are pleased to help Lorette achieve this goal,” said Selinger.  “A spray park is an ideal way to cool off on a hot day and is safer than a swimming pool because there is no standing water of any significant depth.”

The spray park project will include site grading and removal of existing sod, installation of underground utilities/drainage, construction of a concrete pad/asphalt pathway and installation of waterlines and play equipment.

The premier noted the new splash pad will be an appropriate addition to the other recreational facilities in the community which include the Complex Communautaire de Lorette Community Complex that features a hockey rink, three-sheet curling rink, meeting rooms and a large hall, soccer pitches, baseball diamonds, a toboggan hill and walking path along the Seine River.  The community also has tennis courts and a nine-hole golf course.

“Sports and healthy outdoor activities give youth a positive outlet for their energy and can provide a focus for family entertainment,” said Selinger.  “The development of attractions like a spray park and other recreational sites also contribute to the appeal of a community, carrying the message that those who live there care about the services offered to their citizens and that it is a good place to live, work, start a business and raise a family."
