Manitoba To Host Next Annual Meeting Of Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers Responsible For The Status Of Women

Manitoba will lead discussions on issues facing women during next year’s annual meeting of ministers responsible for the status of women, Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan, minister responsible for the status of women, announced today. The meeting is schedule for September 2008.

“I look forward to discussing with my colleagues the important issues facing women in this country,” said Allan. “We have had many successes but we must continue to work to improve the social and economic well-being of all women in Canada.”

The announcement comes on the heels of a successful federal-provincial-territorial ministers meeting in Nunavut. Ministers discussed three priorities for action to provide concrete support to Canadian women. These priorities address women’s economic security, the importance of supporting Aboriginal women in leadership positions and the treatment of Aboriginal women within the justice system.

“We will continue to build on the momentum gained over this last week and realize further improvements for women,” said Marilyn Brick, MLA for St. Norbert who represented Manitoba at the meeting in Nunavut. “Each jurisdiction has committed to further action in support of women’s issues.”

Since the first meeting in 1981, ministers have met annually to examine ways to improve women’s equality and to exchange information on issues affecting women in Canada, specifically in the areas of economic security, violence and human rights.
