Premier Shortens Participation in China Trade Mission to Attend Lathlin Funeral



CHONGQING, China—Premier Gary Doer is shortening his participation in the Canadian premiers’ economic mission to China in order to return to Manitoba to attend the Saturday funeral of long-time friend and colleague Oscar Lathlin.
 
“It was with tremendous sadness that I learned of the passing of our friend and colleague,” Doer said. “Oscar was a strong, caring voice for northern Manitoba at both the cabinet and caucus tables, and worked tirelessly for his constituents and the people of the north.
 
“Oscar will be deeply missed.”
 
Doer is currently participating in the Canadian Leaders’ Mission: China 2008. The mission includes Premier Dalton McGuinty of Ontario, Premier Shawn Graham of New Brunswick, Premier Robert Ghiz of Prince Edward Island and former premier Pierre Marc Johnson of Quebec as well as more than 110 business, education and other leaders including 30 from Manitoba..
 
The mission will run until Friday, however, the premier is departing Thursday in order to attend Lathlin’s funeral in the Pas.
