BUILDINGFoundations Bursaries Help Students Build Brighter Futures: Mackintosh

Nine Students from Manitoba Housing Score High Marks in Education, In Community

Nine students living in public or subsidized housing have been awarded bursaries under the province’s BUILDINGFoundations strategy to help them pay for their post-secondary educations, Family Services and Housing Minister Gord Mackintosh announced today.
 
“These young people are not only taking huge strides in their own lives, they are making positive changes in their communities,” said Mackintosh. “Along with their studies, they have demonstrated their commitment to community and volunteer work and we salute them.”
 
The BUILDINGFoundations bursary recipients this year are:
·         Tracy Lynn Parenteau,
·         Cheryl Mains,
·         Corinne Spence,
·         Jennifer Petty,
·         Tessia Jordan,
·         Phoebe Paddy,
·         Carey Sinclair,
·         Sophia Kattenat, and
·         Marlene Aguilar.
 
Nine $1,000 bursaries are awarded each year under the BUILDINGFoundations Bursary Fund which is part of the province’s overall housing strategy.  Recipients are selected from applicants based on a combination of academic excellence and volunteer work in the community.
  
The four-pillar (HomeWorks, Roof Over Every Bed, RENOvations and BUILDINGFoundations), $188‑million strategy provides affordable housing, revitalizes inner-city neighbourhoods and existing public housing, invests in emergency and transitional shelter and provides basic renovation programs.
 
Earlier this month, the province announced a capital investment of $48 million in the second year of the BUILDINGFoundations strategy. This will be used to revitalize Manitoba Housing’s aging stock, boost the economy, improve energy efficiency and assist low-income families obtain employment through community employment programs.
