BUILDINGfoundations Bursaries Support Students Building A Better Future For Themselves: Irvin-Ross

Nine Students Score High Marks In Education and Community Activities

Nine students have been awarded BUILDINGFoundations bursaries as part of the province’s long‑term strategy to renew Manitoba Housing and support low-income households. Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross announced today.
 
“Today we are celebrating youth.  These young people are making positive contributions to their communities and give us real hope for the future,” said Irvin-Ross.  “Along with a commitment to their studies, they have demonstrated their commitment to community and volunteer work and we are pleased to support their efforts to achieve success.”
 
The bursary is open to post-secondary students who are attending college or university, who are Manitoba Housing tenants or who live in subsidized housing associated with Manitoba Housing.
 
The 2009 BUILDINGFoundations bursary recipients are:
·         Kimberly Parks,
·         Tara Ayotte,
·         Samantha Dumas,
·         Tania Lerat,
·         Sherry McKay,
·         Gustavo Mazariegos,
·         Chantell Quill,
·         Marina A. Sampson, and
·         Isse Shaiye
 
Nine $1,000 bursaries are awarded each year under the BUILDINGFoundations Bursary Fund which is part of HOMEWorks!, the province’s long-term housing strategy and investment plan. Applications are reviewed and evaluated based on a combination of academic excellence and volunteer work in the community.  The bursary program began in 2007 and has provided 18 recipients with bursaries of $1000 each.
