Province Making Justice System More Effective by Adding Prosecutors and Support Resources: Swan

– – –
Unprecedented Investment in Prosecutions: Attorney General

The province will add 53 new prosecutors and 29 paralegal and clerical staff by the end of 2016, Attorney General Andrew Swan announced today.

“Manitobans have a right to feel safe in their communities and in their homes,” said Swan.  “Improved prosecutions, as a result of our investment, will help ensure that people who commit crimes get the sentences they deserve.”

Since 1999, the province’s investment in prosecutions has increased by more than 150 per cent. In that time, a total of 48 new prosecutors have been added in Manitoba and the number of support staff has doubled.

In addition to the 17.5 prosecution and 16.5 support staff positions already added since 2009, 10 prosecutors and seven paralegal and clerical staff will also be added in 2011-12, with a total of 70 prosecutors and 45 support staff to be added by 2016.

“MACA is pleased to see the government’s commitment to increase resources for prosecutions,” said Lisa Carson, president of the Manitoba Association of Crown Attorneys.  “The commitment made by the government today will allow Crown prosecutors in Manitoba to perform their jobs effectively and efficiently in order to best serve the people of Manitoba in ensuring that cases are properly assessed, prepared and prosecuted.”

“Our government has consistently invested in police, in prosecutors and in crime prevention,” said Swan.  “This announcement today strengthens one of the key cornerstones of our justice system.”
