Premier Offers Condolences to Polish Community

The thoughts and prayers of all Manitobans are with the people of Poland and our own Polish community at this profoundly sad time, Premier Greg Selinger said today.

“President Lech Kaczynski devoted his life to fighting for democracy and freedom for his countrymen,” Selinger said.  “We join with the Polish people in mourning his tragic death and we share in the pride of his brave legacy.”

Kaczynski was killed in the crash of a Polish air force plane on April 10 while travelling to Russia on a trip to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.  His wife, Maria, and other senior Polish government officials also died in the crash.

“All Manitobans extend their sincere condolences to the Polish people for this unimaginable loss,” Selinger said.

Flags at the Legislative Building will fly at half mast for the coming week and a book of condolences will be set up at the building today.

Manitobans are invited to sign it.  The book will be presented to Poland’s ambassador to Canada.
