Premier to Join Western Governors to Discuss Water Management, Energy Generation and Transmission, Conserving Landscapes

Premier Greg Selinger leaves tomorrow to join western governors to discuss water management, energy generation and transmission, and conserving landscapes at the Western Governors’ Association (WGA) 100th anniversary meeting being held in Whitefish, Mont.

“These are all areas of vital importance to Manitoba,” Selinger said.  “I’ve had several opportunities to meet with host Gov. Brian Schweitzer and I look forward to engaging him and his colleagues on these and other topics.”

This year, 12 governors are expected to attend the meeting including incoming association chair Idaho Gov. Butch Otter.  As well, this year’s WGA meeting welcomes a key official from the Obama administration federal Energy Regulatory Commission chair Jon Wellinghoff.

Selinger also said the three-day meeting will provide an opportunity to speak to governors about the priorities established by all western provinces and territories at the recent Western Premiers’ Conference.

“Western governors and western premiers share many of the same priorities such as using our water resources more efficiently and sustainably and facilitating the creation of green jobs,” said Selinger.

Manitoba’s two-way trade with the WGA states was more than $4.48 billion in 2009.
