Province Commits to Repairing Flood-damaged Campground at Spruce Woods Provincial Park

One of Manitoba’s top camping destinations has experienced severe flooding, but the Selinger government is committed to repairing the damage with the hopes of having the campground open for Manitoba families this summer, Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie announced today.

“Summer provides valuable time for families to get outside and enjoy Manitoba’s backyard in our provincial parks,” said Blaikie.  “As soon as the flood water recedes, our parks crews will work diligently to ensure Manitobans can access the campsites as soon as possible.”

In mid-April, ice jams caused levels on the Assiniboine River to rise significantly, flooding the lower Kiche Manitou campground.  Dikes were being built and have since been repaired and completed.  The area is still under water and several buildings are affected.  Manitoba Conservation is working to pump the water out, but the lower campground will remain closed at least until the end of June.  No new reservations will be taken for this area at this time.  Manitoba Parks is contacting people with current reservations for dates prior to June 30to make alternative arrangements.  The upper campground that includes yurts, 30 family group campsites and 43 other sites is still scheduled to open May 13.  Existing reservations will remain in effect.

“Fortunately the upper campsite is on higher ground so Manitobans can still enjoy the great outdoors in beautiful Spruce Woods this May long weekend and throughout June,” said Agricultural, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Stan Struthers who toured the area today.

The latest flood forecasts for the Assiniboine River predict that water levels will remain high for several weeks.  Damage to the park and campground will be assessed once the floodwaters recede.

Flooding has caused significant damage across the province to private property, as well as municipal and provincial infrastructure such as roads.  The full extent of damages will be assessed as flood waters recede.  The provincial government has committed to a disaster financial assistance program in response to this year’s flood.  Application forms and further details about the program are available online at www.manitobaemo.ca or by contacting the Emergency Measures Organization at 204‑945‑3050 or 1-888-267-8298 (toll-free).  Applications are also available at most municipal offices.
