Special Access on Roads Available for Flood-affected Areas

Restrictions on a number of roads have been eased in flood-affected areas so agricultural producers needing to immediately move feed, livestock or machinery can do so, Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Steve Ashton said today.

“Serious flooding is impacting many areas in the province and we know that agricultural producers have the job of protecting their animals, machinery and feed.  By providing a reasonable approach to this, we will allow them to make the necessary moves to protect their farming operations as well as continue to provide some protection of our roads during the spring thaw period,” said Ashton.

The minister noted that roads closed due to flooding will remain closed.  Everyone is reminded about the danger of fast-moving water and are asked to keep away for safety.

“We recognize the significant risk flood waters create for farmers and we want to ensure that producers’ animals and feed are not left stranded,” said Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) Minister Stan Struthers.

Producers who may have grain or livestock at risk are encouraged to contact their local MAFRI GO Office.

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation puts road restrictions in place every spring to ensure the integrity of the highway system is protected.  Restrictions normally are in place until the end of May.  Special permits can be issued in places where non-emergent situations require the movement of livestock, feed or machinery.  The permit process has been simplified during this time.  Agricultural producers requiring a special permit will be able to have permits granted by making one phone call to the permit office, Ashton said.  The permit office hours have been expanded to deal with emergency situations.  The number is 1-877-812-0009.
