Canadian Forces to Support Flood Fight in Souris

200 Canadian Forces personnel will be providing immediate support to flood-fighting efforts in Souris, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.

“The Town of Souris asked the provincial government for additional resources and, given the short time frame and the need to quickly mobilize resources, I authorized the request to the Department of National Defence for military support,” said Selinger.

“We know we can count on the military when we need their help,” the premier said.  “People in the community have been doing their best and we need to be sure we do all we can to prepare.”

The community of Souris is building up its defences for the expected crest of the Souris River on July 5.

The community has had about 150 people working on its dike, but there is concern about having the work completed in time.  The earthen dike needs to be topped up with sandbags and more workers are required.  In assessing the situation, it was determined that there was a requirement for large numbers of additional outside personnel to ensure the needed tasks would be completed by Monday.

It is anticipated that the soldiers will begin work early this afternoon.

“On behalf of all Manitobans, and especially those whose property is at risk, I would once again like to thank the federal government for the immediate approval of our request for military support,” added Selinger.
