Wind Alerts Issued for North, South Basins of Lake Winnipeg

  • Environment Canada has issued a strong wind warning for the South Basin of lakes Winnipeg, Manitoba and Winnipegosis.
  • Winds speeds on the three lakes are forecast to become northwest at 56 km/h with gusts of up to 65 km/h before Wednesday morning, according to Environment Canada.
  • Manitoba Water Stewardship advises this wind speed and direction can result in a wind setup which can raise levels by as much as three feet along the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg, and between one and three feet on the South Basin of Lake Manitoba and south shores of Lake Winnipegosis.  In addition, these  winds can result in significant wave action on shorelines.
  • The Environment Canada forecast currently shows these winds starting before Wednesday morning, so setup may start to occur overnight tonight and is forecast to continue through tomorrow until winds decrease in the evening.
  • Environment Canada has also issued a gale warning for the North Basin of Lake Winnipeg.
  • Property owners should take precautions.
