Fire Ban Relaxed in Some Areas of Eastern Manitoba; Backcountry Travel Restrictions Remain

Manitoba Conservation advises, due to accumulated rainfall, forecast rain, the time of year and higher evening humidity, the ban on campfires has been relaxed in some areas of eastern Manitoba.

Travel restrictions on all backcountry trails in the eastern region remain in effect at this time.

Campfires will now be permitted in approved firepits from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. for areas north of PTH 15 and the CN rail line.  This includes part of Whiteshell Provincial Park north of Rennie, and Nopiming, Grand Beach and Patricia Beach provincial parks.   An approved pit must be enclosed on all sides with a grate over the top.

A fire ban remains in effect in areas of Whiteshell Provincial Park south of the CN rail line at Rennie including Toniata, and Caddy, West Hawk and Falcon lakes.  A fire ban is also still in effect for Area 1 east of PR 302 and south of the Trans-Canada Highway, which includes Moose Lake Provincial Park.  Propane and gas appliances can be used with caution.

Maps of the eastern region are available at www.gov.mb.ca/cgi-bin/fire/show_current.pl?location=Fire-Update.

Anyone living, working, camping or travelling through these areas is advised to use extreme caution.  The region will be monitored daily, and travel restrictions and fire bans may change at any time depending on the fire hazard.

Fires can be reported to Manitoba Conservation by calling 1-800-782-0076 (toll-free).  For further information on the ban, campers and travellers can contact the local Manitoba Conservation district office or the fire ban information line at 204-345-1444.
