High Water Advisory Issued for Portions of Northern Manitoba

– – –
Heavy Rainfall Forecast for The Pas, Thompson, Snow Lake, Gillam Areas

  • Manitoba Water Stewardship advises that portions of northern Manitoba, including The Pas, Thompson, Snow Lake and Gillam, are forecast to receive heavy rainfall in the range of 50 to 70 millimetres, which is expected between today and Thursday.
  • There is a risk of localized flooding.
  • These areas are already saturated from well-above-normal rain in July and August.
  • The potential for localized overland flooding is greater in locations with heavier rain.
  • Depending on final rainfall amounts, small tributaries like the Burntwood, Taylor and Sapochi rivers and area lakes could see water levels rise.
  • As a result of heavy rains, larger rivers like the Saskatchewan River may see a slower decline in water levels.
  • Recently constructed flood protection around The Pas is expected to protect against the higher water levels.
  • Much less rain is anticipated in southern portions of the province and Manitoba Water Stewardship will continue to monitor the situation.
