Wind Alert Issued for South Basin of Lake Winnipeg

  • Environment Canada has issued a strong wind warning for the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg.
  • Wind speed on the lake is forecast to become north at 56 km/h this evening, according to Environment Canada.
  • Manitoba Water Stewardship advises this wind speed and direction will result in a wind setup. Winds during the day will start the wind setup, which will increase in the evening with the stronger winds.  This could raise levels by as much as three to five feet along the South Basin of Lake Winnipeg with the highest setup occurring as a result of the strongest winds.  In addition, these  winds can result in significant wave action on shorelines.
  • Property owners should take precautions.
