Province Helps Shine New Light on Transcona Football Field: Lemieux

Young Winnipeg football players and cheering fans will be enjoying evening games and practices thanks to the new lighting added to the football field that is home to the Transcona Nationals Football Club, Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux announced today.

“We believe Manitobans need recreation opportunities and we’re committed to investing in projects that enhance access for leisure activities,” said Lemieux.  “This new lighting will certainly increase the amount of time the field can be used by the Transcona Nationals Football Club and Winnipeg’s minor and midget leagues for evening games and practices.  This will make a real difference for area families.”

Improvements to the field include six light posts, concrete piles and engineering.

“The Transcona Nationals Football Club wishes to formally acknowledge and thank all three levels of government for their contributions to our new field lights at the Transcona Nationals Football Club,” said Cori Knapp, past president of the club.  “Through their support we will not only be better able to develop minor and midget football within the Transcona community but also the city of Winnipeg and several rural communities.  We look forward to a bright future dedicated to the youth of our community.”

The project received funding $100,000 from Phase Two of the Building Communities Initiative II (BCI II) funding partnership between the Province of Manitoba and City of Winnipeg.  The cost of the improvements is estimated at $220,000.

The Transcona Nationals Football Field lighting project is one of 38 BCI II Phase Two projects approved since March 2013.  The BCI II is a multi-year, cost-shared capital initiative developed jointly by the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg to support community revitalization through improvements to local infrastructure in targeted older neighbourhoods and contribute to the vitality, safety and health of communities throughout the city.

Phase One of BCI II provided a total of $10 million between 2010 and 2013.  Of the 38 approved projects under the first phase, 34 have been completed, with the remaining four to be completed in the 2013 construction season.  Projects included improving athletic fields, playgrounds and structures, splash pads, lighting, seating, pathways in parks, upgrades and expansion of community centres.
