Red River College's New Skilled Trades and Technology Centre will Eventually Graduate Nearly 1,000 Skilled Workers Each Year: Premier

A tender has been issued for the design of the first phase of a new Skilled Trades and Technology Centre (STTC) at Red River College’s Notre Dame campus, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.

“My priority as premier is to ensure Manitobans have the skills they need for good jobs right here in Manitoba, while ensuring employers have the skilled workers they need to grow their companies and our economy,” he said.  “This new centre will provide new opportunities for more Manitobans to pursue rewarding careers in trades and technology.  It will also be critical to delivering on our commitment to add 75,000 new skilled workers to Manitoba’s economy by 2020.”

The STTC will be an approximately 100,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that will eventually accommodate nearly 1,000 students learning high-demand trades such as carpentry, electrical and heating, ventilating and air conditioning. It will also provide opportunities to support the development of advanced technology fields such as composites manufacturing.

“This centre will be one of Canada’s most advanced learning facilities.  It will greatly accelerate skills training for Manitobans,” said Stephanie Forsyth, president, Red River College.

The premier noted the design of the new facility will support other related industrial sectors, mechanical and manufacturing innovation, and opportunities to build on Red River College’s success in applied research initiatives.
