Minister Attends Community Grand Opening Celebration

ST-GEORGES—Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum celebrated with students and community members here today at the official opening of the 7,000-square-foot expansion of École communautaire Saint-Georges in the Division scolaire franco manitobaine.

“This new school expansion will help enhance and support French language and culture in this school and community,” said Minister Allum.  “It will also support increased student retention, growing enrolment and will provide a great facility promoting healthy lifestyles for both the students and members of the community.”

The project was jointly funded by the Province of Manitoba and the Government of Canada, each contributing $3 million and $1 million respectively toward the expansion, which consists of a new gymnasium and a new 1,119-sq.-ft. multi-purpose room equipped with a kitchenette for after-school activities including art, dance and community functions.

“The new expansion will serve as a gathering place for community residents of St-Georges and the neighbouring communities as well, bringing families together to share and celebrate special occasions,” the minister said.

Today’s announcement builds on previous investments of over $1 billion in school construction since 1999.  The Manitoba government is building new schools and adding additional classroom space to many existing schools across the province.  Further investments also include new skills and training facilities, new gymnasiums, child-care centres and continuation of science labs across the province, he said.
