New Judge Appointed to Provincial Court in Portage la Prairie

Jean McBride has been appointed to the provincial court to fill an opening in Portage la Prairie, Attorney General Dave Chomiak announced today.

“I welcome Judge McBride to her new position,” said Chomiak. “Her professional expertise and outstanding dedication add to the strength of Manitoba’s judiciary.”

McBride has practised as a Crown attorney with the Prosecutions Branch of Manitoba Justice since graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1998. She is bilingual, with specialized French language legal training. Most recently, she has been working in the Crown’s criminal organization prosecution unit. Prior to that, she worked in a general trial unit prosecuting a wide range of offences following six years in the domestic violence unit.

The new judge was selected from a list of candidates recommended by an independent judicial nominating committee.  The committee was chaired by the chief judge of the Manitoba provincial court, Raymond E. Wyant, and included three community representatives, representatives of the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association, and a provincial court judge.

McBride’s appointment is effective immediately and a swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled as soon as possible.
