Manitoba Government Upgrading More Winnipeg Recreation Facilities

Winnipeggers looking for support to upgrade or expand public or not-for-profit recreation facilities can apply for funding from the provincial government as the second round of intake begins for a $7.5‑million, three-year program, Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief, minister responsible for the City of Winnipeg, announced today.
“Many Winnipeggers who are known around the world for their success in music, sports and cultural activities got their start in our community centres, sports fields or arenas,” said Minister Chief. “We want to support the volunteers and community leaders who work to give our young people opportunities to discover and grow their talents and find a sense of belonging in their neighbourhoods.”
The program will begin accepting applications today for projects that will provide long-term recreational and wellness benefits to communities. The program provides grants to support not‑for‑profit or city-owned community recreation facilities within Winnipeg. Eligible projects involve rehabilitation, improvement or expansion of existing community assets such as athletic facilities, community centres, parks and cultural facilities.
Non-profit community organizations and city-owned facilities can apply until May 16. The program provides grants with no requirement of matching funding from project proponents.
The minister noted, since the program launched last year, the province has committed more than $3.8 million towards 91 projects that have helped upgrade community centres, parks, trails, bike paths, arenas and gyms in Winnipeg.
