Tender Awarded for New Health Centre in Selkirk
– – –Construction to Begin This Spring on Project to Enhance Health-care Services in Region: Minister Selby
Work on the health centre in Selkirk is expected to begin this spring now that the construction tender has been awarded to the EllisDon corporation, Health Minister Erin Selby announced today.
“Manitobans from across the Interlake and eastern Manitoba, as well as north Winnipeg, access health-care services and supports at the Selkirk hospital,” said Minister Selby. “This new facility will enhance clinical services and add an MRI facility in the region, supporting quality care for families.”
Atapproximately 184,870 square feet,the new facility will bedouble the size of the existing hospital. Services available will include surgery, obstetrics, medicine, emergency, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, community cancer outreach, dialysis, palliative care and MRI imaging.
The number of beds will increase to 65 from 51 including 55 medical/surgical beds, six obstetrics beds and four special-care beds. To improve patient safety, comfort and privacy, more than 80 per cent of the rooms will be single-bed rooms, compared to 20 per cent in the existing hospital.
The number of beds in the new health centre is something the region has reviewed extensively, according to John Stinson, chief executive officer of the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority.
“It’s our intent to align the services of the Selkirk Regional Health Centre with regionalacute-care needs,” said Stinson. “We’re confident the health centre’s design and the inclusion of the MRI ensure we’ll be able to meet our residents’ current and future acute-care needs. We are very excited to see this project moving forward.”
The facility has been designed to support future expansions that may be required to meet the needs of a larger population and to provide additional services, the minister said.
As required by the Manitoba Green Building Policy, the new health centre will seek a minimum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED) Silver rating and be 33 per cent more efficient than the Model National Energy Code minimum standards. This includes:
- high-performance building systems,
- geothermal heat-pump technology for cooling and heating,
- heat recovery from exhaust air,
- 7.5 per cent recycled content,
- materials that will reduce indoor air contaminants, and
- high-efficiency bathrooms and faucets.
The new health centre will be located between the site of the current hospital at 100 Easton Dr. and the Selkirk Recreation Complex at 180 Easton Dr. The project has an estimated completion date of 2017, the minister said.
