Premier Selinger Joins Their Royal Highnesses in Manitoba Capital

Premier Greg Selinger greeted the royal couple at Canadian Forces Base 17 Wing last night and is joining them at some better- and lesser-known places of interest today.

“Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will have the opportunity to visit the unique Journey to Churchill exhibit at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, which will soon cement our global reputation as the polar bear capital of the world,” said Premier Selinger. “I’m also pleased to have the opportunity to share with the royal couple some lesser-known Manitoba success stories including a tour of Innovation Alley where they will meet with the young, creative entrepreneurs who are partnering with us to create good jobs and grow our high-tech economy.”

In addition, the Duchess of Cornwall will help honour the Royal Winnipeg Ballet on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. Later today, the royal couple will also attend the induction ceremony of this year’s Order of Manitoba recipients at the Legislative Building, honouring Manitobans who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in a variety of fields.

To honour the royal couple’s visit to Manitoba, Premier Selinger today announced support for children and families in the inner city.  New funding for the Urban Circle Training Centre will establish a before- and after-school child-care program, utilizing the intergenerational, cultural model employed at Urban Circle’s early learning and child-care program known as Makoonsag, which means ‘little bears’ in Cree.
